SCIENCE SHIP: Dark matter detection & plume data

Be proud, Canada!

Sudbury, Ontario is set to be the home of a new facility which could unlock more of the mysteries around dark matter.

It’s two kilometres below the surface, which helps cut down on background interference.

660’s Jonathan Muma hopped on board the Science Ship with Saint Mary’s University Astrophysicist Dr. Rob Thacker to learn more.

When NASA’s Galileo spacecraft flew over Jupiter’s moon, Europa two decades ago, it picked up an odd magnetic anomaly.

Now in 2018, scientists have gone back and looked at the data again and determined it likely flew through a plume of water vapour: a tantalizing tease that life could be found there.

Just how rare is it to make a discovery like this, so long after the event? Dr. Thacker explained:
