New international terminal opens at YYC

It’s a big day for Calgary’s airport, as the new international terminal opens.

The $2-billion project adds about two million square feet, or the equivalent of 34 football fields, to YYC.

There will be 24 new aircraft gates for international and U.S. destinations, and the new state of the art baggage handling system can process 4,000 bags every hour.

Doug was headed to Chicago Monday morning, and said Calgary has entered the real world, and was expecting a problem-free experience.

“I think they’ve got it under control. I think they took the proper time to check out all the bugs, and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Randy was off to San Francisco, and then Salt Lake City.

He compared the old terminal with one you’d find in Moscow.

“This springs us ahead about 30 years and the city should be very proud of it,” he said.

The new terminal is also environmentally friendly with almost 600 geo-thermal wells, 660 kilometres of in-floor radiant heating and the ability to capture 800,000 litres of rainwater.

The first flight left for Mexico at 6 a.m.
