Notley approval rating down, but still middle of the pack among premiers

A new Angus Reid poll on the popularity of Canada’s premiers has Alberta’s Rachel Notley in the middle of the pack.

Angus Reid’s Executive Director Shachi Kurl said her job approval sits at 31 per cent, which is down one per cent from May.

“You’ve got regulatory reform that’s not sitting well with a lot of business owners and people in the agricultural industry and sector, and unresolved issue around Alberta’s economy due to declining oil prices,” Kurl said.

The silver lining for Notley is that she hasn’t seen a big decline in the last quarter.

“The more important question will be where does this trend go over time, does it continue to trend down?” she said. “Does it continue to stay flat or does she actually perhaps see that trend start tick up?”

Kurl said the economy will play a big role in that, but not exclusively.

Only two premiers, Saskatchewan’s Brad Wall and Manitoba’s Brian Pallister, are over 50 per cent.
