An Edmonton man who grew up in the bush, and who always wanted to see a cougar got his wish Tuesday night, but he also got a bit more than he bargained for.
Donny Stone was out for a run about 100 kilometres southeast of Grande Prairie, when he saw two cougars walk in front of him.
As soon as he saw the cougars, Donny pulled out his bear spray, his bear banger and his camera phone.
“I heard a quick rustle behind me,” he explains the animals must have been stalking him because they had entered the bush further up.
“They went into the bush, and then started walking towards me, so, I was surprised when it came up from behind me, because I wasn’t expecting them to be there yet,” he said.
He told me he had just pulled the safety on the bear spray when the cat lunged, and after hitting the aggressive beast with a blast, gave the second cougar which was crouching in the bush a shot too.
Donny says the bear spray was a life saver, because by the time he would have shot off the banger or pulled his knife, the big cat would have been all over him.
