Poll shows Calgarians passionate about secondary suites issue

If you needed any more proof that it’s one of the biggest issues facing the city, here it is: a new poll from Mainstreet Technologies finds 70 per cent of Calgarians are following the secondary suites debate at city hall.

However, when it comes to whether or not they want them, Calgarians remain split.

The survey shows 42 per cent of Calgarians approve of widespread secondary suite reform, while 37 per cent are opposed.

President and CEO of Mainstreet Technologies Quitto Maggie says it’s an interesting result.

“We’ve done other similar polls in other municipalities where we’ve seen similar splits and similar levels in terms of interest on a particular issue, but we’ve not seen anything like this in Calgary before,” he said.

The poll also found three out of four people support making it easier to put in a secondary suite in districts where zoning already allows it.

Calgarians also want their say on the record: nearly two thirds showed support for the city to conduct a non-binding vote during the next municipal election, to change the rules around secondary suites.
