Calgary welcomes Canadian Premier League team

Starting next year, Calgary will have a team in the Canadian Premier League.

The club, based out of Spruce Meadows, will be called Cavalry FC and coached by Tommy Wheeldon Jr. He will also serve as general manager.

“Calgary has witnessed and hosted world leading events such as the Winter Olympics and International Showjumping at Spruce Meadows, lifted Grey Cups and a Stanley Cup,” he said.

“Many an Olympian have trained in this City and competed against the World’s best. The only thing we’ve missed in order to class ourselves as a World Class sporting city, is the professional level of the world’s biggest game… until now. I am extremely proud to have played a part in helping bring the professional game to this City with a truly world-class organization in Spruce Meadows.”

Renovations to existing facilities at Spruce Meadows will result in a new soccer-specific stadium with an additional 5,000 seats. Cavalry FC is owned and operated by Spruce Meadows Sports & Entertainment.

The CPL’s inaugural season is slated for Spring 2019.
