Late spring could mean short but intense allergy season for Calgary

Calgary’s delayed spring could mean a shorter but more intense allergy season, according to an expert.

Dr. Joel Doctor said it can be difficult to predict.

“Because it largely depends on what the weather is like during the peak of the pollen season. In Calgary, first the trees pollinate, and that’s typically in the month of May. So, if May happens to be quite dry and quite warm then you could have a very strong tree pollen season,” he said.

So far, there’s still a lot of moisture, but there’s still the potential for weather to change and symptoms to be worse.

“The plants tend to pollinate to a greater level when it’s quite warm and also when it’s quite windy there’s greater exposure to pollen as well. So, the worst conditions for hay fever sufferers are hot, dry and windy conditions,” Dr. Doctor said.

He said if you’re allergic to grasses, a major cause of hay fever in the Calgary region, you can expect to experience those sneezes and itchy eyes around Stampede time.
