Calgary police officer cleared in fatal shooting

A Calgary police officer has been cleared in the shooting death of a 76-year-old man in 2016.

Bob Crowle was holding a butcher knife in the garage of a home when an officer shot him on October 11.

Moments earlier, a 21-year-old man covered in blood ran out of the home and said his grandfather was attacking him.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team Executive Director Susan Hughson says that’s when police intervened.

“Once they entered they were confronted by the male holding a large knife. Repeated verbal commands to drop the knife preceded their use of force. Under the criminal code an officer in entitled to use as much force as is reasonably necessary in the lawful execution of his or her duties,” said Hughson.

ASIRT says in the weeks leading up to the incident, Crowle was becoming increasingly frustrated about his declining physical and mental health.

One witness described hearing him talk about wanting to confront his grandson with a hammer and to end his own life.
