Calgary council will talk pot bylaws Thursday

Cannabis bylaws go before city council Thursday as Calgary prepares for legalized recreational pot use later this year, with the biggest issue being whether smokers should be allowed to indulge in public.

Gerry Baxter with the Calgary Residential Rental Association said regardless of the outcome, landlords shouldn’t be concerned about their rights to keep buildings smoke-free, since they will still have the ultimate say.

“Many landlords have smoke-free buildings and consequently if you’re a cannabis-user and you smoke it, you’re prohibited now from smoking and you’ll continue to be prohibited from smoking inside the building,” he said.

He says renters may want to explore other legal means of consuming cannabis, including through foods, or oils.
