Calgary police officer in stable condition after shooting, suspect dead

A police officer has been shot in the northeast Calgary community of Abbeydale.

He was rushed to the Foothills Medical Centre where he is in stable condition, surrounded by his family. The head of the Calgary Police Association identified the injured officer as Jordan Forget – a five-year member of the force.

Police say the incident began with the robbery of a convenience store. The suspect then proceeded to allegedly attempt a carjacking and home break-in before shots were exchanged between the suspect and police.

The shooter was believed to have been barricaded in a garage, which was engulfed in flames. The suspect was later found dead.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says it is investigating and considers the man’s death to have occurred in police custody since officers had the garage in the city’s northeast surrounded at the time.

Investigators say police returned fire after the officer was shot and say the body of the man was discovered in the garage once the fire was extinguished.

Investigators say they have not confirmed the man’s identity or determined how he died.
