Jaromir Jagr in talks to leave the Calgary Flames: Sportsnet

Jaromir Jagr could soon be hanging up his Calgary Flames jersey for good.

Speaking on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, said the Flames are discussing how to part ways with the future NHL Hall of Famer.

“The Calgary Flames and Jaromir Jagr are working on an exit, and you know, there’s a certain amount of respect that he’s earned and deserves to have and Calgary’s trying to give it to him,” he said.

Friedman said Jagr’s agent has been given permission to talk to every other team in the league to see if there’s a fit for him.

“At this time there isn’t, we’ll see […] what the future is maybe somewhere else,” said Friedman. “His time in Calgary is about done and they’re just trying to figure out how they’ll go about it.”

Sportsnet 960 The FAN’s Pat Steinberg said there were signs Jagr’s tenure with the Flames would be short lived.

“That he would be traded within the NHL, or the two sides would agree to mutually terminate the contract,” said Steinberg. “Then he could sign in Europe, he could potentially play for the Czech Republic in the Olympics next month.”

Steinberg said the veteran athlete wasn’t sure if he’d play in the NHL this season, so he wasn’t in good shape to hit the ice.

“You don’t miss training camp and not train during the off-season, in this day and age, in high-level sports and not suffer injuries, and that’s exactly what happened,” he said.

The 45-year-old has just one goal and six assists, in an injury-plagued 22 games this season.

Jagr signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the team and Steinberg says there should be an announcement from the team within a few days.

“There’s a feeling from the Flames standpoint that […] he’s not been able to be in the lineup enough,” he said. “So they’re looking at it and saying we need guys who can be in the lineup on a regular basis and […] guys who can help us everyday.”

Jagr has missed the last two games due to a nagging lower-body injury.
