Tributes pour in for AC/DC co-founder, guitarist Malcolm Young

SYDNEY, Australia (NEWS 1130) – Co-founder of AC/DC and guitarist Malcolm Young has died, aged 64.

A statement on the band’s Facebook page says Young passed away with his family by his bedside.

“Renowned for his musical prowess Malcolm was a songwriter, guitarist, performer, producer and visionary who inspired many. From the outset, he knew what he wanted to achieve and, along with his younger brother, took to the world stage giving their all at every show. Nothing less would do for their fans.”

“He leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever.”

“Malcolm, job well done.”

Young started AC/DC in 1973 with his brother, fellow guitarist Angus. They were inspired to choose the high-energy name AC/DC from the back of a sewing machine owned by their sister, Margaret.

While Angus, the group’s school-uniform-wearing lead guitarist, was the public face of the band, Malcolm Young was its key writer and leader, the member the rest of the band watched for onstage changes and cutoffs.

AC/DC were remarkably consistent for over 40 years with their mix of driving hard rock, lusty lyrics and bluesy shuffles, selling over 200 million albums, surviving the loss of its first singer and creating one of the greatest rock records ever in “Back in Black,” the world’s second bestselling album behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Malcolm Young had been living with dementia for several years. Malcolm and Angus’ other brother George Young, a member of The Easybeats and a producer for AC/DC, died last month.

He is survived by his wife, two children, son-in-law, three grandchildren, sister and brother.
