Vimy Coin unveiled at Calgary’s military museum

The new Vimy Ridge commemorative coin was officially unveiled at The Military Museums in Calgary on Thursday.

Ed Mullens joined many Calgarians for the coin’s unveiling. Military service is a staple in his family history.

His son was a reservist for eight years, Mullens served in the military, as well, along with his father and grandfather.

He was in France earlier this year for the special ceremony at the Vimy monument. Mullens says he was honoured to take the trip with his son.

“This was a bucket list thing that we wanted to do and Vimy’s centennial was the perfect opportunity to do it,” Mullens said. “It was awesome.”

Jeremy Diamond with The Vimy Foundation says the coin is a way for Canadians to carry a little piece of history.

“This is like having a little textbook in your pocket all the time or a little video clip in your pocket all the time. It’s always an opportunity now to learn a little bit about our history,” said Diamond.

The toonie is officially in circulation.
