Parks Canada lifts fire ban in national parks

The cooler temperatures and rain has prompted Parks Canada to lift fire bans in Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks.

The town of Banff has also cancelled its fire ban but it does remain in effect for Redstreak campground in Kootenay National Park.

Fire Vegetation specialist for Banff National Park Jane Park says a number of tickets were handed out over the course of the ban.

“So there were a number of charges that were laid by the law enforcement staff in the national parks but most people obeyed the rules, but we did have a couple of wildfires that were started from what we believe might have been some illegal fires,” said Park.

Park would like to remind everyone to obey all regulations which include having fires only in designated fire pits in campgrounds and day-use areas.

There are also only some backcountry campgrounds that allow campfires, to see a full list check out the Parks Canada website.
