Kenow wildfire remains active and out of control

In its latest update, the Unified Command Centre says the Kenow fire didn’t grow overnight.

The blaze currently covers approximately 36,000 hectares and is still considered out of control. Helicopters and other aircraft continue to conduct aerial suppression tactics in the area.

However, the weather is helping.

The fire received 6 millimetres of rain overnight. Cooler temperatures are providing some relief, and the forecast is calling for more rain over the next few days.

Still, there are concerns about how long it could take to put out the fire because when it flared Monday, it’s believed to have burned deep and could smoulder for months.

A number of evacuation orders remain in effect, including the Waterton town site, but most buildings were saved there.

However, the visitor centre and some ranches around Waterton Lakes National Park weren’t as lucky.
