Association raising money for Calgary paramedic in hospital for drug exposure

A Calgary paramedic is in hospital getting treated for a drug he was exposed to on the job. According to the Alberta Paramedic Association, the EMS worker identified as Ryan B needed a ventilator and medication to keep him alive.

“Due to the nature of the paramedics unpredictable profession, often times we find ourselves exposed to hazards,” said Executive Director Marc Moebis in a emailed statement. “Whether that hazard is a sharp piece of glass, liquids at an accident scene, a street drug or a violent patient, facing these hazards is an accepted part of the job and requires a certain level of grit.”

The APA said Ryan is in the intensive care unit and still very sick because his organs are dysfunctioning.

“To respect the wishes of his family we are respecting the paramedics privacy regarding the circumstances of that exposure. Right now the paramedic community is just pulling together to provide some relief and support for Ryan and his family,” states Moebis.

The association set up a *fund to help Ryan and his family.
