King penguin chick debuts at the Calgary Zoo

People can now catch a glimpse of the newest king penguin chick at the Calgary Zoo.

The boy or girl was born on August 1, making it the fourth penguin chick this year.

Dr. Malu Celli said mom, Diana, and dad, Arthur, have been a good team.

“They have been great so far,” she explained. “They’re splitting duties 50/50 as it should be in a penguin world and any parenting world really, and just really looking after the chick growing steadily so we couldn’t be more pleased.”

Celli added this is an exciting time for the colony.

“With the chicks, we do see that because the chick will call for food and especially when it’s bigger and it’s outside with mom and dad and around,” she said. “A lot of the other birds will have an urge to feed and look after it.”

Celli said they hope other birds learn some parenting skills this way so when it’s their time to breed they know a thing or two going into it.
