Hot, dry July a boon for Calgary’s tourism industry

Warmer than average temperatures have helped to boost attendance at summer events such as the Calgary Stampede and Calgary Folk Music Festival.

Tourism Calgary CEO Cindy Ady said this has resulted in good business for Calgary’s hospitality industry.

“I think that’s the take home message,” Ady explained. “The weather has been fantastic, so, from a tourism perspective, it’s going pretty well in Calgary right now. Attendance is up, year over year hotel room occupancies are up, all great indicators that things are going well.”

She is optimistic the trend will continue through the rest of the summer, as long as the weather cooperates.

“We’ve got things like the Shaw Charity Classic still in front of us, Opera in the Village, GlobalFest, and a lot of lesser known festivals that people might not know about,” Ady stated. “I encourage people to visit our pop-up visitor information centres. They can help you, or go to our website at www.visitcalgary.com to see the whole line of what’s still to be offered this summer”

Ady said Tourism Calgary has fielded triple the number of visitor inquiries this summer over last, adding Canada 150 celebrations and an increase in travel to Banff have benefitted Calgary as well.
