Toronto Zoo shows off 3-month-old cheetah cubs

Like any proud parent, the Toronto Zoo is showing off how much its five adorable cheetah cubs have grown.

The three brothers and two sisters are now three months old and weigh between five and six kilograms — that’s over ten times their birth weight.

The zoo said the cubs have completely weaned from mom and have transitioned to eating solid food.

“Even at this young age, keepers have noted that each cub is developing their own personality,” the zoo said in a statement.

“One of the females and two of the males are more bold and curious, while the other two (one male and one female) are a bit more nervous if mom isn’t nearby.”

But you’ll have to wait a little longer to see these adorable animals first hand. The zoo said cheetahs are very sensitive to disturbance so mom and cubs will remain off display for a few more months.

“Laini, who is on loan from Parc Safari as part of a cooperative breeding program, has been an excellent first-time mom with her rambunctious cubs,” the zoo said.

“They recently received their vaccine booster shots allowing them to explore all of the sights, sounds, and smells in an outdoor yard for the first time.”

The Toronto Zoo is participating in a cheetah conservation breeding program. The cheetah is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list.

It’s a nice bit of good news to end the week after the zoo announced on Monday that one of its three snow leopard cubs, born in May, died last month from pneumonia.

The zoo has experienced a huge baby boom over the last year with the birth of two pandas, four white lions, a polar bear, two cloud leopards, 4 African penguins, a rhino and a zebra.
