Travel Feature: Navigating the crowds in Banff

Free national park passes for the country’s birthday means Banff will be a beehive of activity this summer.

So, what if you still want to go?

A new bus line from Calgary has just been launched, but if you still want to drive to the mountain parks, travel writer Jody Robbins suggests you park at Lake Louise Ski Resort.

“They shuttle you over to the Fairmount Chateau Lake Louise,” she said.

“Besides that, you might just want to stay right at Lake Louise Ski Resort because they have this fantastic grizzly viewing with their gondola. You can take the gondola up, watch the grizzlies munching on the grass and then have a nice lunch or dinner at their Whitehorn Bistro.”

If you do go into Banff, there’s another service just launched, called Hop on Banff.

“This takes you to all the hot spots around Banff, like Johnston Canyon and Lake Minnewanka and it’s in an old school bus, so it’s super fun.”

There are some out of the way destinations if you want a bit of peace and quiet, including Mount Engadine Lodge and Sundance Lodge.

“You have to horseback in to Sundance Lodge in the summer. That’s the caveat there, but they do have indoor washroom and heated showers on site. As well, Shadow Lake Lodge is an option,” Robbins said.

“This is a three to five hour hike from the Red Earth Creek parking lot, just off the Trans Canada Highway.”

You can find a lot more ideas in Jody’s book 25 Places in Canada Every Family Should Visit.
