Poverty reduction improving: Vibrant Communities Calgary

This city’s community appears a little brighter this year. That is according to Vibrant Communities Calgary.

Executive Director with the local organization, Franco Savoia confirms in the second year of Calgary’s Calgary Poverty Reduction Initiative, Enough for All, change is visible.

“Some of the proxies would say that we are doing better,” Savoia says, “but, for example with the downturn in the economy, we know that, for example access for the food bank increased, so that’s a negative; but energy cut offs, like you know, where people weren’t able to pay their energy, stayed the same.”

Savoia adds while this week’s report to the community is positive, a clearer picture of exactly how Calgary is performing on poverty reduction will be available once Statistics Canada numbers are released this fall.

A series of recommendations will be reviewed by Vibrant Communities Calgary, this summer.

“One of the things would be: can we, in fact, work more collaboratively between all of the deliveries of services for the poor and the vulnerable,” Savoia questions. “We tend, still, to be, I don’t know, high-siloed. Perhaps we can work harder at it, so that the poor and the vulnerable are supported.”
