First responders injured after Deerfoot crash

A combative patient has sent one paramedic to hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries following a four vehicle crash on Deerfoot Trail.

The man would also leave another paramedic and Calgary Police officer with minor injuries after the altercation.

First responders were called to the scene in the northbound lanes between 17 Ave. S.E. and Memorial Drive around 4 p.m. and were immediately confronted by the man.

It took several members of EMS, the Calgary Fire Department, and the CPS to restrain him. A police officer deployed their taser but even that had little effect.

Investigators are still trying to determine why the patient became combative, he was taken to hospital after being sedated.

Two members of the public who were involved in the collision had to be taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed for more than an hour, while three lanes of southbound were closed for a long period of time as well. Investigators were finally able to clear the scene around 6:30 p.m.

Tow truck drivers were called in and could be seen taking away what appeared to be a responding ambulance and an Acura SUV.

There’s no word yet on charges.
