Woman rushed to hospital after serious two-vehicle crash in Applewood

A 28-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a serious, two vehicle crash in the southeast community of Applewood.

It happened at the intersection of 68 Street S.E. and Applewood Drive. Police say a southbound Honda Civic was turning left when it was struck by a northbound black Dodge Ram, driven by a 28-year-old man.

The crash sent the two vehicles hurtling towards a light standard where it came to rest in front of a second truck.

It left the Civic heavily damaged and glass littered across the roadway.

Witnesses reported seeing first-responders trying to kick in the rear-window in a bid to reach the female driver. She would later have to be extricated from the carnage.

“The female of the Civic was transported to the Foothills Hospital and is currently there in life-threatening condition,” said Sergeant Dan Rogers of the Traffic Unit. “We’ll be conducting a complete traffic investigation as if it were a fatality.”

“At this time there are no factors we’re aware of that would have contributed to the collision, the lights appeared to be functioning and until the recon (reconstruction) team have done their measurements we won’t know the exact speeds of the vehicles.”

Rogers says there was one person in both the car and truck.

Shelly lives across the street and heard the crash.

“I was in the backyard and I just heard the collision, it was very loud, so I ran out to see what was going on. There were lots of people so I had to get back to the kids, it was nasty,” she told 660 NEWS. “It took longer than usual (for first responders), I was surprised, they normally respond really fast but today they were a little slow.”
