Calgarians can now get a sneak peek at the Calgary Zoo’s latest additions.
Four red river hoglets, believed to be all males, were born April 8 and are now out and about.
“The guys are living with mom and are nursing very well,” Calgary Zoo spokesperson Trish Exton-Parder said of the family and mother, Ine. “What’s really interesting is each little guy picks a nipple for himself. That’s how they nurse. They have their little private nursing stations and it’s going beautifully. They’re in there with a couple other females, who are really good aunts, who are helping everything along.”
Exton-Parder added it will be a few months before the hoglets lose their stripes and about a year until they grow into full adults.
This birth makes 11 red river hogs at the zoo and is a part of the species survival plan.
