Performing arts scene feels the lasting pinch of sluggish economy

Calgary’s performing arts scene has become a casualty of corporate cost-cutting as the city’s economic doldrums drag into a third year.

That’s prompted organizations to band together to seek more municipal support.

Patti Pon leads the city’s arts development agency. She says companies are stretched tight because their corporate supporters are pulling back.

“Just because companies are not-for-profit doesn’t mean that they’re for loss. You do have to have you inputs be greater than your outputs over the long run,” said Pon.

She adds, Calgary ranks near the bottom in Canada when it comes to ongoing municipal arts grants, which excludes capital investment.
