Calgarians called heroes after building fire on Macleod Trail

Calgary fire crews are praising three Calgarians who helped people get out of a burning building.

Just before 1 p.m. Saturday, crews responded to a blaze at the Urban Centre strip mall along Macleod Trail, between 42 and 45th avenues.

Mackie Martineau, who was working at the Calgary Dream Centre across the street at the time, saw the flames and ran over to help.

“One of my clients ran over and gave me a hand got someone out of a tattoo shop, I think we got everyone out. Then me and a lady got trapped on the second floor by the flames so that was kind of fun, so I got her to jump over the railing and some people came underneath us and I helped her drop down and then I dropped down myself.”

District Fire Chief Wayne McQueen says the pair were two of three people that helped get people out of the building

“A lot of people in there had no idea there was a fire going on over their heads and if it wasn’t for those people going door to door it could be a lot worse,” said McQueen.

Crews were able to get the fire under control quickly and are still investigating the origin.
