Calgary’s first cat cafe opening in Kensington this spring

It’s ‘fur’ real.

This spring, Calgarians will be able to sip java and spend some time with some rescue felines at the Regal Cat Cafe in Kensington.

Co-Owner Tia Weiler and her husband were inspired by a little reality television.

“We came across this idea when we saw an episode of the Amazing Race, where the contestants had to go to a cat cafe in Asia, where they are very popular,” she said.

They hadn’t heard of one opening in Calgary or Alberta and put their best ‘paw’ forward.

“We’ll have a separate area we’re calling our ‘Kitty Kingdom’, where folks can come in and take their coffee in to visit with the cats,” Weiler said.

Customers will also be able to play and take photos.

“Just interact with our resident kitties provided by the Meow Foundation,” she said. “(And) if you accidentally fall in love with one, we’ll have on site adoption specialists to help you out with that.”

Weiler said allergy-prone folks can save themselves a sneeze and observe from the other side of the glass.

There will be walk-in spots available, or Calgarians will be able to reserve time at the ‘Kitty Kingdom’ online.
