Penguins take their first waddle of 2017 at Calgary Zoo

It’s the first penguin walk of 2017 at the Calgary Zoo!

Nine king penguins strutted their stuff Friday to kick off the fifth annual stroll.

Also among the normal looking penguins was a brown fuzzy bird joining in on the fun, as you can see in the video below.

General Curator at the Zoo, Colleen Baird says that is their penguin chick that was born six months ago.

“They’re brown, they’re fuzzy, they have a different texture to their feather, fur-type look. They look fuzzy, they look furry, but all of that will shed away when they molt this year and then it’ll look like one of the adults.

Baird adds the chick does not have a name yet but it’s sure to be of the ‘royal’ variety, like all the other penguins such as Caesar, Diana and Arthur.

She says this daily event is not only meant to educate Calgarians about the birds but also to promote sea-wise food.

“Sustainable food that doesn’t impact the environment. So we like to educate people with the Penguin Walk, to remind them that there are more sustainable ways to eat seafood, and we here at the Calgary Zoo, we feed our penguins sustainable fish.”

You can find the little waddlers roving around the Penguin Plunge every day at 11 a.m.
