Air Canada flight bound for Toronto aborts take-off after small engine fire

A scary moment for passengers aboard Air Canada flight AC130, leaving Calgary for Toronto after a small engine fire.

The Airbus A321 had to abort take off after some passengers reported hearing a large boom from one side of the plane.

Calgary Fire crews were called to respond to the scene, by the time they arrived the flames were gone and the fire was out.

“It happened in the engine of the aircraft, the fire was out on arrival,” said Public Information Officer Carol Henke. “We used our cameras, our heat cameras to check for any hot spots. There were some hot spots but the fire was out before we even got to it and now our fire crews are escorting the plane back to the hangar as a precaution.”

“No injuries that I’m aware of and everything went to plan when an emergnecy like this happens,” Henke added.

Those aboard the flight were told that the engine had stalled and that they would be forced to return to terminal.

Air Canada has issued a statement on the incident:

“An engine indication was received before the aircraft was airborne, and the aircraft stopped on the runway.  The Emergency Response vehicles were on scene strictly as a precaution. We can confirm there was no fire. The aircraft will be inspected by our Maintenance and Engineering professionals, and we have made arrangements for another aircraft to be brought in to resume the flight later tonight.  The aircraft was an A321 with 185 passengers onboard.”
