Edmonton man in serious condition after Fentanyl overdose in Athabasca

An Edmonton man remains in serious condition after reportedly overdosing on Fentanyl in Athabasca Wednesday.

RCMP were alerted to the scene just after 9 a.m. when a female driver flagged down an officer inside the town limits.

She told the officer that there was a 27-year-old male passenger in the back of her truck overdosing from the use of Fentanyl.

According to Mounties, he wasn’t breathing and had no pulse.

As the police were dealing with the situation, a woman approached in a separate car and told the officers she had been in a collision with the truck in question.

She and the officer began CPR on the man while they rushed him to Athabasca Hospital.

RCMP say he was stabilized and then flown to the Edmonton area where he remains under doctor supervision.

Investigators have since discovered that the victim was from Edmonton and had been in Athabasca visiting.

It’s not known how they got their hands on the drug but there have been no previous reports to police of its use in the area.

They want people to become familiar with the signs and symptoms of a Fentanyl overdose, they include the person’s breathing is slow or not breathing at all, blue lips and nails, choking or throwing up, making gurgling sounds, cold and clammy skin and unconsciousness.

No charges are anticipated in the incident.
