Council debates more breaks for Calgary homeowners

Some much needed relief for Calgary homeowners will be on the table at Monday’s city council meeting.

City Administration has come forward with a plan to reduce water and drainage hikes in the coming years, in addition to eliminating the fee for the new green bin program until 2018.

The reductions would save the average home owner about $13 per month next year, and nearly $16 per month in 2018.

Councillor Evan Woolley likes the idea, but still thinks more can be done.

“From people living in social housing to you know, 27,000 jobs lost in downtown Calgary — we’re almost edging up on double digit unemployment and this is a real challenge right now,” he said.

He says the city should pull about $100-million from its reserve fund which is worth about half-a-billion dollars to fund low income housing projects, and provide tax-relief for small businesses.
