Stampeder suspended for testing positive for banned substance

A Calgary Stampeder has been suspended for three games by the CFL after testing positive for a banned drug.

Defensive lineman Quinn Smith tested positive for methandienone, an anabolic steroid.

Smith released a statement, saying he wants to apologize to everyone for the situation, especially the Calgary Stampeders, who he says have always treated him like family.

He says this is his mistake, and no one else’s, adding that he loves the fans who watch their games, and hopes to get another chance to experience their love.

Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel also released the following statement:

“The Calgary Stampeders fully support the joint policy on performance-enhancing drugs and we were very disappointed when informed of Quinn’s violation. Quinn recognizes the gravity of his error and the harm he has done to himself and his reputation. We trust he will learn from his mistake and avoid another occurrence. This incident proves that players need to be aware and wise about the supplements they are taking. Following our game against Edmonton, we will make a determination on Quinn’s level of participation for practice and meetings during the suspension.”

Calgary visits the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday night.
