Whole Foods puts their much anticipated arrival in Calgary on hold

It looks like it’s going to be a little while longer before Whole Foods Market comes to Calgary.

The U.S. organic grocery store giant had announced last summer that it was planning to come to Cowtown, setting up shop at the North Hills Mall.

On Friday, in a release, they issued they had to back out of their plans to build in the city’s northwest.

“Following a series of timing challenges we faced with the landlord at our Calgary site, we opted to terminate the lease. Whole Foods Market remains committed to expanding in Canada with four stores in development and we continue to explore additional sites in the market.”

Calgary city councillor Druh Farrell had been looking forward to their arrival, hoping that it would help revitalize the shopping centre and make up for some big names that had left in recent years.

“It’s not just about the Whole Foods although it’s always fun to have some new grocery shopping opportunities to come to Calgary, it’s a comprehensive plan, it’s still in the planning phases, it still needs to come to council but it’s looking at the potential of this underutilized mall, this aging mall and turning it into something more contemporary, more urban and a better use of land, right by the LRT,” Farrell told 660 NEWS last summer.

She had said the idea of the transforming these malls makes a lot of sense.

It’s still unclear what will go in now in where they were planning for Whole Foods Market.

No word yet from Whole Foods as to when they may be planning to open another location.
