Forest fire smoke to lower air quality Wednesday

Anyone with breathing issues and those “at risk” are being warned about air quality Wednesday in Calgary.

Environment Canada is bumping up the rating to a “4” or “moderate” given the amount of forest fire smoke they expect will settle in over the city.

It’s making its way northeast from western Montana and Idaho.

“We’re expecting smoke from forest fires to move into the province,” said lead Meteorologist Kyle Fougere. “Smoke is going to come into the higher levels of the atmosphere overnight so Wednesday morning in Calgary we expect it’s probably going to be a little bit hazy.”

Fougere says most of the smoke will remain in the higher levels of the atmosphere but some of it may surface late in the afternoon.

“We aren’t expecting really high concentrations of smoke at the surface but the air quality could decrease during the day so we get up into that moderate risk category.”

“Those who might have breathing troubles, or the very young, or elderly or the people who are very active outside, they might want to consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities for moderate risk if they experience any symptoms.”

He adds most of the smoke is expected to move into the higher parts of the atmosphere.

The cold front Calgary is expecting Thursday should help to clear the air.
