Female inmate dies at Calgary Remand Centre

A woman has died behind bars at the Calgary Remand Centre.

Details remain scarce at this point, and an Alberta Justice spokesperson confirms their investigation is still in the very early stages.

EMS were called to the scene just after 7 a.m Tuesday and pronounced her dead.

“Paramedics responded to the Calgary Remand Centre this morning, details are limited from our angle but paramedics did arrive and determined she was deceased on location there and immediately turned the scene over the Medical Examiner,” says EMS Public Education Officer Adam Loria.

Loria adds there was no transport of the patient to hospital.

Alberta Justice says it immediately notified Calgary Police which is conducting an investigation, alongside their own internal investigation.

Calgary Remand Centre is a facility that houses both men and women awaiting trial in southern Alberta, as well as those detained under the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

As of 5 p/m Tuesday afternoon, Calgary Police say they do not believe the death is suspicious, and no foul play is suspected.
