Big school with even bigger name opens its doors in NE Calgary

It’s a big school with an even bigger name to live up to, providing 1,100 students with a new home for learning in the city’s northeast.

On Tuesday, officials opened the doors to the brand new Nelson Mandela High School in Saddleridge. The school will be servicing the Saddleridge, Coral Springs, Falconridge, Taradale, Martindale and Castleridge communities.

It’s the Calgary Board of Education’s newest facility and Principal Theresa Martin says they’re only accepting grade ten and eleven students for now.

“We have some pretty phenomenal offerings for our students, some diverse offerings that aren’t going to be seen at other places. We will have a state of the art culinary, our culinary kitchen will probably rival many of the downtown culinary kitchens with more than a $1 million dollars in equipment.”

She adds there will be an aviation program believed to be the only one of its kind in Alberta.

“High schools tend not to be as readily built and opened, but we are going to be quite full in the next couple of years but certainly there are some plans for other high schools within the CBE,” she said.

There are also some other schools with capacity that she says they will no doubt be looking closely at.
