Calgarians eager to hit high bar, balance beam and vault

Young Calgarians aren’t just looking to be the next Penny Oleksiak in the pool.

2004 gold medallist Kyle Shewfelt says more kids are signing up at his gymnastics centre here in Calgary, after being exposed to the sport in Rio.

Shewfelt worked the broadcast booth in Brazil, providing commentary for artistic gymnastics.

He was especially impressed with Canada’s Ellie Black and he says he thinks the sky is the limit with her.

“She’s set a new standard,” he explained on Breakfast Television. “She was only four-tenths of a point out of the bronze medal position. She had a wonderful competition. I have a daughter. She’s seven months old and I’m like, ‘I want her to be like Ellie Black’. She’s such a great leader and such a kind person. All of her competitors love her.”

Black’s fifth place marked the best ever finish for Canada in the individual all-around.
