Emergency crews demand drivers give them more room

Give us room!

It’s a simple request from emergency responders, but often gets ignored.

RCMP, Sheriffs, and EMS are doing a blitz along the QE2 highway Wednesday, reminding drivers to slow down to 60 km/h if you’re passing emergency vehicles in the right lane.

Sergeant Darrin Turnbull tells 660NEWS, people just need to pay attention to what’s happening around them.

“Had it myself, where you’re there on the side of the road, you’re speaking to the driver of a vehicle, you’re at a crash scene and then you feel the wind of the vehicle go by you at 110 km/h, one foot away from you.”

By doing this, a driver could cause a tragedy.

“At that speed, if anybody gets hit the results are going to be tragic. So we want to educate the motorists in Alberta, and remind them of the law, to slow down or move over.”

Not only could someone get hurt, if you’re caught it will cost you a lot.

Fines run upwards of $1000 depending how fast you’re going.
