Calgary Flames introduce new goalie, Brian Elliott

Calgary’s newest netminder was introduced Wednesday morning.

Brian Elliott was acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Blues during last month’s NHL Entry Draft.

It took some time to make it official, but finally General Manager Brad Treliving handed Elliott ‘s new #1 jersey to him in a press conference.

Treliving believes the 31-year old goalie will be a great influence, on and off the ice.

“We talked to people that have been with him at his various stops, we talked to the players that have played with him, teammates that have had him, coaches that have coached him. The work ethic, the type of person that he is in the locker room, the teammate stood out as much as the goaltender.”

After donning the jersey, Elliott spoke to reporters, and heaped praise upon his new team about their decisions at the draft.

“Calgary made the best moves around, and they were the winners. It’s an honour to be mentioned when a team in Canada and Calgary kind of goes after you, and really wants you, and that’s what it’s all about as a goalie.”

After joking about his age and joining such a young team, Elliott added he is glad to help players like Johnny Gaudreau and Sam Bennett improve.

“It’s exciting to be on that kind of growth and I think this team only has…sorry I’m at a loss for words right now. We can only go up, I think, so I’m going to do my best to be the backbone of the team and try to be a leader.”

Last season with St. Louis, Elliott won 23 games, with a 2.07 goals against average and had four shutouts.
