Canadian golf star Brooke Henderson visits Calgary; honoured to be Olympian

We now know who will be headed to next month’s Rio Olympics representing the Canadian golf team.

Brooke Henderson, Alena Sharp, Graham DeLaet and David Hearn will make up the squad.

At an event in Calgary on Tuesday, 18-year-old Henderson, who is ranked number two in the LPGA, said it’s an honour to represent her country.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” she said from the city’s Golf Canada Centre. “It’s surreal in a way. I’m looking forward to the Olympics. It’s like a sixth major on the LPGA tour and I already have one under my belt.”

Last month, Henderson won her first major at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

She also said because of scheduling, she won’t be able to take part in the opening or closing ceremonies.

“Just the way logistics and stuff works,” she explained to media. “We’re going to come in Saturday, which is four or five days before our event actually starts. So, we’ll be able to practice a little bit and get a feel for the whole atmosphere. We’re actually going to miss closing ceremonies as well, because we’re flying here to Calgary so I can play the Canadian Open the next week.”

The Olympics run from August 5 to 21.
