Calgary Pride says it’ll continue to welcome local law enforcement in annual parade

Officials with Calgary Pride say they will continue to welcome local law enforcement in its annual parade.

They’re steering clear however of commenting on the situation developing between Pride Toronto and Black Lives Matter.

The Canadian chapter of the larger U.S. movement halted Toronto’s parade on Sunday, staging a sit-in, demanding a ban on police floats and in future parades.

It also wanted organizers to include more funding and better representation for racialized communities during Pride events.

In a news conference earlier today, they referred to Pride organizers handling of blackness and black LGBTQ youth as abysmal.

The Executive Director of Pride Toronto signed onto their demands but later told media he did it so he could get the parade moving again.

Calgary Pride is usually held at the end of the summer to avoid conflict with the Calgary Stampede and other festivals and because there’s less chance of rain.

This year’s parade has been scheduled for September 4, 2016.
