Long weekend rain could mean a warm, dry summer ahead

There may be a silver lining to all that recent wet, long weekend weather — the summer is expected to be warm and dryer than normal.

Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips tells 660 NEWS that it’ll be a similar story across the rest of the country.

Phillips says the recent rain is going to help immensely in terms of moisture in the province.

“You really need both normal and above normal precipitation just to balance things out. That’s why I think this precipitation, that you had over the last week or so, I mean it could be like money in the bank,” said Phillips.

He adds, in terms of future precipitation, it’s too difficult to predict.

“It’s worse than throwing a dart or flipping a coin and there’s just no skill at all in determining precipitation and that really is because it could be raining in your front yard but not your back yard. I mean it’s very convective in the summer time.”

Phillips says this weekend’s rainfall is an example of nature correcting itself.

“I know it spoiled your long weekend, I mean you’re probably thinking ‘oh my gosh we wouldn’t want a summer like that’ and clearly you wouldn’t. But, this is almost nature correcting itself and that precipitation is like gold.”

Nearly 30 millimeters fell on the city over the long weekend.
