‘I Love Oil Sands’ campaign impacted by Fort McMurray wildfire

The ‘I Love Oil Sands’ campaign has hit a significant hiccup: much of its promotional material was in a home in Fort McMurray that has since burned to the ground.

The material was in the basement of Robbie Picard’s house, as he had just held an event there the week before.

He’s had a chance to look at his property, and all that’s left standing is the chimney.

Picard says this won’t keep them down.

He says the city owes everything positive right now in this fire to the industry itself.

“Industry is the reason we survived this fire so successfully. All those endless safety meetings, FLRAs and training that the sites have provided came into our subconscious, and we literally — 80,000 people — left in an orderly fashion,” he said.

He’s confident his campaign, his city and the industry will bounce back.
