Brentwood murder suspect to face trial by judge

Matthew de Grood, the man charged in one of our city’s worst mass murders will face a trial by judge.

Degrood is facing five counts of first degree murder in the deaths of five people at a home in Brentwood in April of 2014.

Jury selection in the case was expected to start on Thursday, but the Alberta Crown Prosecutor has indicated through Twitter that the trial will start Monday and be heard by a judge alone.

When a trial date was set last year it was indicated that if the Crown and defence agree the case could be heard by judge alone.

The 23 year-old de Grood is accused of fatally stabbing Lawrence Hong, Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Joshua Hunter and Kaitlin Perras during a house party to celebrate the end of university classes.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.
