Council expected to send CalgaryNEXT back to the drawing board

It’s a big day at city council for the proposed new home of the Calgary Flames and Stampeders.

Councillors will vote on a report, recommending the CalgaryNEXT proposal be nixed in its current form, and requesting the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation come back with new options in October.

So, what do Calgarians think?

“I don’t see any issues with the current arena we have. I mean, it works — other than the flood that happened recently. It’s still useable, so I don’t see any reason to get a new one,” one man told CityNews.

Not everyone agrees.

“I do think that we need a new one. I know that the shape of the Saddledome isn’t the best for certain concerts. I don’t know if the timing is right, though,” a woman said.

The report indicates the cost of the proposed West Village location would come in at about $1.8-billion — nearly double the original price put forward by CSEC.
