Vehicle thief speeds away from police, finds himself in District 1 parking lot

A car thief who evaded CPS officers clearly made the wrong turn.

On Tuesday afternoon, in the 3900 Block of Manchester Road S.E, an SUV was left unattended and running with keys in the ignition.

Seconds later, a man got behind the wheel, took off, and less than a minute later, was tailed by District 1 officers.

The man fled from police at a high rate of speed; officers did not pursue the vehicle but did broadcast a description and location to other officers.

The suspect found a parking lot he assumed was safe and tried to ditch the SUV, but he didn’t realize he had just pulled into the District 1 office lot.

A number of officers were in the area when he tried to take off, but the suspect was arrested a short distance away without incident.

The 42-year-old man is facing a number of charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Police are reminding people to avoid leaving keys in or around your vehicle, keep them in a safe spot, and never leave your vehicle unattended while the keys are in the ignition.

You can view footage of the arrest on the Calgary Police Service Facebook page.
