Alberta Food Banks receives biggest donation ever

A big boost for Alberta Food Banks Wednesday morning, as CIBC announced a donation of $250,000 for its several locations, including Calgary.

Executive Director Stephanie Rigby says it couldn’t come at a better time: food bank usage in the province has grown since late 2014 by 23 per cent.

Severe increases in need have been reported from food banks in Airdrie, Wood Buffalo, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Parkland County, Grand Prairie, Athabasca and Red Deer.

“It’s incredibly challenging for our food banks, and I would love to say that a donation of this magnitude is going to really solve the problem, but as generous as it is, it’s really just a start,” she said.

Rigby hopes this donation will spur other corporate partners to step up to the plate.
