Council pushing police to step up residential traffic enforcement

We could be seeing a dedicated residential traffic safety enforcement team in place as soon as the summer.
A notice of motion Monday, by Councillor Shane Keating calls for the Calgary Police Servie to have a strategy in place by July on improving traffic enforcement in residential areas.
He says it’s especially important if the city decides to lower the speed limit in residential zones, which is an option a city committee is exploring.
“If people are going to speed, the sign isn’t going to make them stop. What you need to do is have the carrot and the stick, and obviously the carrot is better safety for pedestrians in all areas of the city, and the stick is if you ignore the speed limit, you’re going to get a ticket,” he said.
Keating says representatives for the police have told him they already have an outline for a strategy in place, so the July deadline should be met.
He says one option is to train and certify peace officers to hand out traffic tickets.
