Err on the side of caution in parking lots this holiday season

The last thing you need when you’re trying to have a holly, jolly Christmas is a fender bender.

Mall parking lots are overflowing with cars this time of year and can be tricky to navigate, even for the most seasoned of holiday shoppers.

Ron Wilson, Manager of Operations, Driver Education at AMA, says you should avoid backing up whenever possible. However, if you can’t pull through a parking spot, it’s always safer to back in, rather than back out.

He added, when you’re going in reverse; don’t fully rely on that sensor or rear-view camera.

“You can get a lot of snow or mud building up in our climate,” Wilson explained to 660 NEWS. “Some of those cameras will be blocked by mud or snow in this type of weather we’re having right now. It’s good as another precaution, but the main emphasis is always on the driver to look at what’s going on around them.”

The speed limit in all parking lots is 15 km/hour, unless otherwise posted.
