Police identify Planned Parenthood gunman, motive unknown

The alleged suspect in the deadly Colorado Springs shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic has been identified by police as 57-year-old Robert Lewis Dear.

The gunman burst into the Planned Parenthood clinic on Friday and opened fire, killing a police officer and two civilians. Nine other people were injured in the shooting and a stand-off lasted for five hours following the incident

Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers says authorities aren’t ready to discuss a possible motive of the gunman, but says people can make “inferences from where it took place.”

Neighbours of Dear say when he spoke, he appeared disturbed, but he didn’t talk about religion or abortion.

There are reports that the gunman barricaded himself inside Planned Parenthood.

Police issued a shelter-in-place order for a nearby shopping mall.

Colorado Springs is the second-most populous city in Colorado, and is about 110 kilometres south of Denver.

The street in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic is still closed off as police continue to investigate.

Lewis is said to appear in court on Monday.
